We often hear this comment, particularly from relatively young members who are still building up a pension. I can certainly imagine that the losses that pension funds are currently suffering as a result of the corona crisis are reinforcing this belief. If you share this view, however, I have some good news, despite the difficult times: it is absolutely wrong. Read on to find out why that is.

Policy funding ratio: 112.2% Quarterly Q1 figures of 2020

The policy funding ratio at 31 March 2020 was 112.2%

•

The return from 1 January to 31 March 2020 was -6.6%

•

The pension fund assets at 31 March 2020 were € 19,722 million

Latest developments

The policy funding ratio fell by 2 percentage points during Q1 – a very minor drop compared with the severe loss suffered by the actual funding ratio, which plummeted 15 percentage points. This drop in the funding ratio is a direct consequence of the corona crisis: to prevent the virus from spreading further, governments were forced to impose numerous restrictions, plunging the global economy into a deep recession and triggering declines both on the stock markets and in interest rates.

Accruing a pension: how does it work?

It is possible that you are not giving your pension any thought just now, for example because your retirement it is too far away, or because you are not familiar with the Dutch pension system, and pension matters are difficult. Nevertheless, it is useful to know a few facts about your pension. The basics of understanding your pension starts with your pension accrual. We have put together a short animated video (less than 4 minutes) to explain how pension accrual works.

Futureproofing your MijnPPF login

You are already using your DigiD to log in to MijnPPF. In the future, pension funds will be legally required to use a system of double authentication for their members to log in: you will need to verify your identity in two steps instead of just one. Two-step verification is much more difficult to hack, meaning that your personal data will be more secure. Learn how to make your DigiD safer below.

DigiD login methods

If you do not already use the DigiD app or SMS text verification to log in, you can prepare for the new system by updating your DigiD settings now.

Go to mijn.digid.nl and log in.
Change the option 'Always log in using the DigiD app or SMS verification' to active.

You can use the Pension Planner in MijnPPF to calculate the financial implications of various choices, and find out how much pension you will receive in each scenario.
